Zero-click marketing: what it means when AI answers before anyone visits your site
Zero-click marketing means building trust and recall where your audience already spends time, including inside AI answers, instead of counting on clicks back to your site. It's the practical response to a search and social landscape that increasingly settles the question without a click at all.
The clicks are disappearing
More people are seeing your content than ever, yet fewer are clicking through, a pattern showing up across search, social and AI answers alike, where impressions keep climbing as click-through rates keep falling.
The scale surprises most marketers. An estimated 58.5% of all Google searches now end without a click, 37.1% resolve entirely on the results page, and 21.4% simply lead to another search. Of the remaining 41.5% that do produce a click, 70.5% lands on organic results, 28.5% goes to Google's own properties such as Maps and YouTube, and only 1% goes to paid ads. In practical terms, out of every 1,000 Google searches, roughly 360 clicks make it to the open web.

It's not only Google
Search behaviour now spans well beyond one channel. Traditional search engines still account for roughly 81% of searches, Google alone around 74%, while commerce platforms such as Amazon take about 10%, social platforms like YouTube and Instagram take around 5%, and AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude already sit at roughly 3% and climbing fast. Every one of these platforms shares the same incentive: hold the visitor inside the platform.
Social feeds make this visible. Meta's own reporting shows that over 97% of Facebook post views between 2021 and 2025 went to posts with no outbound link, and platforms increasingly throttle reach on the posts that do include one. SparkToro reports seeing roughly 10 times the reach on link-free posts across Facebook, LinkedIn and X.
Why attribution was already breaking down
Even before AI answers entered the picture, traffic-based attribution carried four structural problems. Roughly 30% of users accept tracking cookies, and Safari blocks third-party cookies by default. Ad and analytics blockers affect an estimated 20 to 60% of browser sessions, higher again among technical audiences. The average person now uses several devices, which makes cross-device tracking unreliable. And privacy regulation, GDPR, CCPA and equivalents, limits what's legally trackable across most markets.
Dark social makes the problem worse. In one SparkToro experiment tracking over 1,100 social visits, all traffic from TikTok, Slack, Discord, WhatsApp and Mastodon appeared in analytics simply as ‘direct,’ with no referral data attached at all. 75% of Facebook Messenger traffic and 30% of Instagram DM traffic were hidden the same way, and even LinkedIn misattributed referrals 14% of the time.
What to measure instead of traffic
Traffic and revenue are not the same metric, and treating the first as a stand-in for the second is exactly what's producing the confusing board conversations many marketing leaders are having right now.
A more useful model tracks leading indicators against the outcome they actually feed:
Funnel stage | AI answers | Your website |
Audience | AI share of voice (how often you appear across ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overview) | Returning visitors and branded search |
Reach | Citation rate (how often you're actually cited, not just mentioned) | Email subscriber growth |
Interest | Query coverage and intent quality (breadth and relevance of the questions you show up for) | Comparison and pricing page engagement |
Outcome | Content readiness (whether the page confirms what the AI told the buyer to expect) | Conversion rate and conversion lift |
Conversion lift is the outcome that matters. Everything listed above it is a leading indicator, useful for showing whether you're heading the right way, not proof on its own.
The public record shapes what AI says about you before anyone visits
Buyers are forming opinions long before AI ever sends a citation your way, and often somewhere other than your website. Research from Ross Simmons at Foundation Inc found Reddit outranking B2B SaaS vendors on 50 to 66% of shared keywords, with 77% of that visibility coming from plain category terms rather than ‘best’ or ‘alternative’ searches. Separately, Will Reynolds at Seir Interactive traced one negative review theme, high account manager turnover, showing up 67 times across AI outputs from Perplexity and ChatGPT. Publishing real employee retention data stopped the pattern repeating within two citation cycles, though the effect faded without regular refreshes.
The lesson holds either way. If your strongest proof points live only in a sales deck or a Slack thread, AI has nothing to cite. If they're not published, they're not part of the record AI draws from.
How this connects to your AI-led buyer journey
This is where the wider shift becomes specific to your website. AI now handles a growing share of discovery and pre-qualification: a buyer asks a question, gets an answer, and forms a first impression of your brand before your site is involved at all. Your website's job now happens after discovery, not during it, it's where the buyer checks that what the AI told them is true, and decides whether to act.
That split, AI for discovery, website for conversion, is what we call the AI-led buyer journey. Zero-click marketing describes the broader shift across search, social and AI. The AI-led buyer journey is what that shift means specifically for your site: whether AI engines describe you accurately, and whether your website delivers on what they said once the buyer arrives.
What to actually do about it
Publish content that answers the question directly, inside the platform, without needing a click to be useful.
Keep your email list as the one channel that stays fully under your control.
Track leading indicators against revenue and look for correlation over time, rather than single-touch proof.
Make sure the pages AI is most likely to cite, comparisons, pricing, FAQs, actually confirm what a buyer was told before they arrive.

Frequently asked questions
What is zero-click marketing?
Zero-click marketing is the practice of building visibility and trust on the platforms where people already are, including AI answers, rather than depending on clicks back to your website.
How is zero-click marketing different from zero-click search?
Zero-click search describes user behaviour: a search that resolves without a click. Zero-click marketing describes the strategic response to that behaviour.
Why are so many Google searches now zero-click?
AI Overviews and featured snippets answer many queries directly on the results page, so a large share of searches, an estimated 58.5%, resolve without a visit to any website.
If traffic isn't the metric to track, what should replace it?
Leading indicators like AI share of voice, citation rate, query coverage and branded search, tracked alongside conversion lift as the outcome metric they feed.
Does zero-click marketing mean SEO no longer matters?
No. It means SEO now has to earn a citation or mention, not just a ranking, because a click is no longer guaranteed even when you rank well.
