How to check if AI can find your website
Updated: Jul 26
TL;DR Most businesses assume that if Google can find them, AI can too. That is not always true. This is a practical five-step check to find out whether AI systems can discover, interpret and recommend your business, and what the gaps tell you about your pipeline.
Google can find your website. That much you probably know.
But before a potential customer reaches you today, something else may happen first. They open ChatGPT, Perplexity, or Google with AI Overviews and ask:
"Which providers should I consider for this?" "What are the best options in London?" "Who specialises in this type of service?"
If your business is absent from those answers, you may be removed from consideration before anyone has visited a single page.
The question is no longer just whether Google can find you. It is whether AI can, and whether it has enough information to recommend you.
Here is a five-step check you can run today.

Step 1: Ask AI the questions your buyers ask
Open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google Search with AI Overviews enabled.
Ask the kinds of questions a potential customer might use before they have a shortlist. Do not search for your brand name yet. Search for your category.
For example:
Best SaaS UX agencies in London
Top home care providers in Kent
Aesthetic clinics for skin boosters near me

The goal is to understand whether your business appears naturally in category-level searches, not just branded ones.
If AI never surfaces your business in these answers, that is your first signal. You may already be missing from the moment buyers are most open to discovering new providers.
Step 2: Does AI understand what your business actually does?
Even if your business appears, look closely at how it is described.
Ask the same AI tools directly:
What does [your business name] do?
Who is [your business name] for?
What services does [your business name] offer?
Compare the answers with how you actually position yourself.
Many websites have enough information for AI to find them but not enough clarity for AI to describe them accurately. A vague or incomplete description is a different problem to invisibility, and it requires a different fix. This is one of the five signs your website may be invisible to AI search that businesses most consistently overlook.
Step 3: Are your key pages actually indexed?
A surprising number of websites have important pages that search engines and AI systems cannot easily discover.
In Google, run this search: site:yourdomain.com
Review which pages appear. If your services page, key landing pages or important guides are missing from the results, they are unlikely to feature in AI-generated answers either.
AI systems pull from indexed, crawlable content. A page that Google cannot read is a page AI cannot cite.
Step 4: Does your content give AI something to extract?
AI systems do not simply rank pages. They extract and synthesise information from them. That distinction matters when you are reviewing your content.
Compare these two examples.
Weak: "We deliver innovative solutions that help businesses succeed."
Strong: "Xyra Foundry provides AI readiness audits that help service businesses understand whether AI can discover, interpret and recommend their website."
The second version gives AI something concrete to work with. The first gives it nothing.
Every page you want AI to cite should open with its most direct, specific answer. Not a warm-up. Not a brand statement. The answer first, the context second. To understand why this works differently from traditional SEO, the guide to AEO and GEO explains how AI systems process and extract content.
Step 5: What does Search Console tell you?
Google Search Console can surface early signals about how Google is beginning to connect your content to AI-related queries.
Look at the Queries tab and filter for terms such as:
AI visibility
AI search
Can AI find my website
ChatGPT visibility
AI search optimisation
Even if clicks are low, growing impressions indicate that Google is associating your content with these topics. That is often the earliest measurable signal before meaningful traffic appears.
Also review the Pages tab for any important URLs showing zero impressions. Pages with no impressions have not appeared in Google results at all, and are unlikely to be reaching AI systems either.
Common signs your website may be invisible to AI
Service pages use generic language that AI cannot extract a clear description from
Important pages are not indexed or were built on JavaScript that crawlers cannot read
Content describes features rather than outcomes
Industry expertise is implied rather than explicitly stated
Entity information is inconsistent across platforms (different name, address or description on different sites)
Visitors arriving from AI cannot quickly confirm what you do or what to do next
Visibility is only the first layer
Many businesses focus on whether AI can find them. That is the right starting point. But the more important question is what happens after.
A website can be cited by AI and still fail to convert those visitors if the positioning is unclear, the content is difficult to evaluate, or the next step is not obvious. AI-referred visitors arrive already having researched inside AI. Your page needs to confirm what they were told, not re-introduce you from scratch.
Visibility gets you into the consideration set. Decision readiness determines whether you stay in it.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if AI can find my website?
The quickest test is to open ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google with AI Overviews enabled, then search for your category rather than your brand name. Ask the questions your buyers would ask before they have a shortlist. If your business does not appear in those answers, you are likely absent from the AI discovery stage. You can also ask AI directly: "What does [your business name] do?" and compare the answer with how you actually position yourself.
Does ranking well on Google guarantee AI visibility?
No. Google rankings and AI visibility are related but separate. A website can rank on the first page of Google and still be absent from AI-generated answers. AI systems synthesise content differently from traditional search engines, and the factors that earn citations in AI answers include structured, extractable content, consistent entity signals, and third-party coverage, all of which operate independently of Google position.
Why is my business not showing up in ChatGPT or Perplexity?
The most common reasons are content that is too generic for AI to extract a clear description from, important pages that are not indexed by Google, inconsistent entity signals across platforms, or an absence of third-party coverage that AI uses to validate recommendations. Each requires a different fix, which is why a structured audit produces more reliable results than individual optimisations.
What is the difference between SEO and AI visibility?
SEO focuses on helping search engines rank your pages for relevant queries. AI visibility focuses on whether AI systems can extract, cite and accurately describe your business in generated answers. The two overlap but are not the same. A page that ranks well in search results may still be invisible in AI answers if the content is not structured for extraction. Understanding what AEO and GEO mean in practice is a useful starting point.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
It depends on what is causing the gap. Technical fixes such as making pages crawlable or correcting entity information can take effect within weeks once Google recrawls the site. Content improvements take longer as AI systems need to index and incorporate the updated material. Building external signals such as reviews and press coverage is a longer-term investment. Most businesses see measurable improvement within two to three months of addressing the structural issues first.
Can AI find my website if it has never been indexed by Google?
No. AI systems draw from indexed web content. If Google cannot find and index a page, AI systems cannot cite it. Checking Google Search Console for pages with no impressions, crawl errors, or a last crawl date that predates recent changes is an essential first step before making any content improvements.
